"Believe that you receive the things you ask for in prayer, and God will give them to you."                   Mark 11:24

This is just one of the stipulations the bible lists for prayer and communication with God, but it is powerful. You must believe that God can do what you are asking of Him or you can't receive it. God is only limited by what we believe or don't believe.
